Remember that stimulus bill that was signed when the economy went down the drain and we went into recession? The government decided it was a good idea to bail out financial institutions and billions of dollars was set aside for use on public projects and job creation programs to stimulate economic growth. Did it work? The jury is still out, but there are folks in better shape today than they were two years ago because of it. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, known to most Americans as “The Stimulus Bill” contains a provision that requires the United States Treasury to give out what are known as 1603 Grants to home and business owners who make improvements to their respective structures that include any use of renewable technology. Created mainly to encourage development in solar energy and wind power, these grants are also available for natural gas conversions and HVAC installations, if they fit the criteria. The 1603 program provides, according to their own definition, “Payments for Specified Energy Property in Lieu of Tax Credits”.
