Heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular, and consequently, there are many questions about how these systems work and whether they are worth the investment. While there is a lot of good information out there, there is also a lot of misinformation. At Donmar Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, we have seen first-hand the many benefits that heat pumps offer, and we are here to help dispel some of these myths.

Keep reading as we debunk three of the most common heat pump myths and review some of the benefits of installing a heat pump.

Myth #1: Heat Pumps Aren’t as Effective as Traditional Heating Systems

Many people assume that traditional heating systems (like a furnace) not only heat your home more quickly but provide a more comfortable heat than heat pumps. This is not the case. In some cases, a traditional furnace may initially put out warmer air from your vents, but overall, heat pumps are incredibly efficient systems that provide comparable heating to conventional systems. Additionally, heat pumps work to provide steady, even heating that keeps your home comfortable all winter long. Furthermore, because heat pumps do not need to burn fuel to operate, you may also see an improvement in your indoor air quality.

Myth #2: Heat Pumps Only Work in the Winter

Heat pumps are dual HVAC systems that provide both heating and cooling. In a sense, they are reversible air conditioners/heaters. Their function changes depending on which service you need. When you need cool air, they move warm air out of your home, and when you need heating, they absorb warmth from outside the house and pull it in. There are three types of heat pumps based on the heat source they pull from – air, water, and geothermal (ground) pumps.

Many systems have an automated feature where they adjust how they operate based on the temperatures you set on your thermostat. You also have the option to manually switch the functioning of your system from heating to cooling and vice versa.

Heat pumps will work to effectively cool and heat your home year-round. However, those who live in colder climates where the temperature regularly drops below 25° for extended periods may find that they need an electrical backup heating system. Speak with our heat pump specialists to determine if this is necessary for your situation.

Myth #3: Heat Pumps Are Not a Good Investment

Because heat pumps are a dual system that provides both heating and cooling, you do not have to buy two separate heating and cooling systems, making heat pumps a good investment for most homeowners. Additionally, because heat pumps run more efficiently than traditional systems, you will likely spend less on your monthly utility costs, saving you significantly over time. Modern heat pumps also tend to require less maintenance than traditional systems, making their upkeep less expensive as well.

Is a Heat Pump Right for Me?

While installing a heat pump has a higher initial investment than installing a conventional furnace or AC unit, the heat pump can be more cost-effective and more convenient in the long run. They also have a long lifespan – with proper care and yearly maintenance, a heat pump will last for 15 or more years. However, does this mean that switching to a heat pump is right for you?

You might benefit from installing a heat pump if:

  • Your heating and cooling systems are nearing the end of their lifespans and will likely need to be replaced soon
  • You want to go from two separate systems for heating and cooling to one dual system
  • You are looking for a system that is more energy-efficient
  • You want to reduce your carbon footprint and have a more environmentally friendly home
