The air conditioning unit in your home plays an important role in keeping you cool and reaching maximum comfort in your home. An average central AC system can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, so most homeowners will have to purchase a new unit at some point in time.

The following are four factors you must consider before buying a new central AC unit:

  1. Find an HVAC installer. Conduct research on HVAC companies. When you decided on two to three contractors, ask for quotes, as well as the make and model of the AC systems on the quotes in order to check reviews and compare pricing.
  2. Learn about the installation price. When you replace or install a new AC system, there are often two kinds of costs: the unit price and the installation price. You may be able to save money by buying the unit on your own, but you will likely still be charged for installation.
  3. Determine the proper size. Not all AC units are created equal. Ensure that your central AC system is big enough to cool down your entire home and not waste any energy. A unit that is too large will cycle on and off frequently, using up electricity and lowering energy efficiency. If it is too small, then it will not cool your entire home.
  4. Consider energy efficiency. The energy efficiency of air conditioners is measured by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The government requires all AC systems to have a SEER rating of 13 or higher.
