Summer is in full swing, which means that if you’re like most people, you’re probably using your air conditioner more than at any other time of the year. Yet this increased AC usage also means that it’s more important to take care of your system. Read on to learn the tips you need to keep your AC unit working perfectly this summer, and contact our Sterling HVAC pros at Donmar Heating, Cooling & Plumbing for AC repairs, replacements and installations.

The Top 5 AC Maintenance Tips for Summer Are:

  1. Change Your Filters: This is such a common issue, yet so often, it continues to go neglected. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that you replace your AC filters every 1-2 months, and given your increased usage during the summer, changing filters once a month is probably appropriate. This will also improve your indoor air quality, helping you enjoy total cooling relief without extra debris and allergens interfering with your HVAC system. Luckily, filters can be easily purchased at many local stores, as well as online.
  2. Clean the Coils: By now, you may have already heard our HVAC experts talk aboutthe importance of cleaning the coils on your outside or portable AC unit. This goes a long way towards removing dust and debris form your system, and can help the unit function at peak efficiency throughout the summertime. Cleaning the coils is not hard, either. Just brush away any visible dirt and gently scrub the coils with a soft cloth and mildly soapy water.
  3. Keep Your Unit Free from Blockages: Both inside and outside of your home, it is best to make sure there is a 12-inch space between your AC unit and anything surrounding it. This could include trees or bushes outside or furniture and clothes inside. This will better allow your AC system to function at peak efficiency all summer long.
  4. Check for Leaks: Checking your AC unit’s tubes for freon leaks the minute you suspect your system isn’t working at full power can save you from uncomfortable temperatures later on. Inspecting your ducts for disconnected joints, separated parts, or tiny holes can also cut down on air leaks, thus ensuring your home stays as cool as possible.
  5. Schedule a Maintenance Check: As always, the best thing you can do to keep your AC system working at full capacity this summer is to schedule a maintenance check with a seasoned professional! At Donmar Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, our Sterling HVAC experts can address any of the above issues, checking to see if your refrigerant levels are secure, making sure all your system’s parts are in order, and inspecting and cleaning your AC unit to increase its long-term term efficiency.
